| The body
Yoga creates change from the inside out. In the West we often link it to part of our fitness routine. Undoubtedly, it will change your body starting from your basic body awareness to your overall strength, stamina and flexibility. The decompression of the spine, the lubrication of the joints, the rinsing /stimulation of internal organs, and the release of toxins are less tangible but important changes that will occur in your body.
You start practicing yoga and the next thing you know, you're in line somewhere. Maybe you clasp your hands behind your back, broaden your chest, and stretch your shoulders while you wait. Ahh... You become kinder to your body, more in tune with it, and grateful for all it does for you. |
| The mind
There exists an undeniable link between mind and body. As we engage the body in the practice of yoga postures, we also accrue benefits to the mind that last long beyond our time on the mat. In yoga we are asking our mind to behave a different way, to let go. We set aside tonight's dinner plans or how our boss made us angry earlier today and shift our intentions to the breath and the absence of chatter. Naturally, too, without asking it, the mind changes its normal course as we engage the body in the poses. Through yoga we touch base with the ability to manage our thoughts and mental state. The more we practice, the more this new capability organically fuses to our daily life. Our stress levels decline, once overwhelming situations are less daunting, and greater self-awareness emerges. The change in your psyche can be astonishing.
